A MAN has been charged after homeless tents were urinated on and volunteers were allegedly attacked in Glasgow’s city centre in the early hours of the morning, in what has been described as a “shocking incident”.
Police said they were called following a report of a disturbance in the Glassford Street area of Glasgow at around 3.55am on Saturday.
Homeless Project Scotland said the “disgraceful” incident occurred in the early hours after a man allegedly approached homeless tents and urinated on them.
The charity added that when confronted by volunteers, the man then allegedly attacked members of Homeless Project Scotland.
Officers were then called to the scene where they took “swift action,” according to the charity.
Police Scotland said a 21-year-old man has been arrested and charged in connection with the incident. He is due to appear at Glasgow Sheriff Court at a later date.
In a statement online, a spokesperson for Homeless Project Scotland said they wanted to make “one thing absolutely clear,” and that is the charity’s volunteers “come to help, not to be abused or assaulted”.
The statement added: “This follows a shocking incident where a man urinated on the tent of a homeless person before volunteers were subjected to abuse and assault while trying to protect those in our care.
“At Homeless Project Scotland, we will always stand up for our volunteers and the vulnerable people we support. We will not tolerate violence, intimidation, or the abuse of people who are already at their lowest.
“Thank you to Police Scotland for their swift response and continued support. We will continue to defend our volunteers and those who rely on us, no matter what.”
Police said enquiries into the incident are ongoing.
A Police Scotland spokesperson said: “Around 3.55am on Saturday, August 1, 2026, we were called to a report of a disturbance in the Glassford Street area of Glasgow.
“A 21-year-old man has been arrested and charged in connection with the incident. He is due to appear at Glasgow Sheriff Court at a later date.
“Enquiries are ongoing.”
