Man charged after fireball horror crash on Maybury Road that killed Jonny Smith in Edinburgh

Police in Edinburgh have charged a man following the fatal horror fireball smash at the Maybury Roundabout in Edinburgh on 25 May 2018 that killed 29-year-old Jonny Smith.

A BMW X5 ploughed into Mr Smith's Peugeot 206, which subsequently burst into flames. It's believed the BMW was swerving to avoid another vehicle that was being driven on the wrong side of the road.

He was found dead inside the vehicle after fire crews extinguished the blaze - he was only a few minutes from his home at the time.

Today, police have announced that - as a result of inquiries conducted by Corstorphine CID - a 26-year-old man was arrested in connection with the cash on 7 August and will appear from custody at Edinburgh Sheriff Court today (Thursday 8 August).

Police Scotland say that they are continuing to liaise with the Crown Office and Procurator Fiscal Service in relation to any further charges, which may be brought against other individuals.

Detective Chief Inspector Graham Grant from Edinburgh CID said:

"This has been a very complex investigation where we have worked to establish the full circumstances surrounding the collision and the roles of any and all vehicles involved.

"I would like to thank all of those who have come forward over the past 14 months to provide us with information to assist our inquiries.

"While one man will now appear in court in connection with this incident, we will be maintaining our dialogue with our partners at the Crown Office in respect of any further action that may be required."
