A 29-year-old man has been charged with dangerous operation of a motor vehicle and driving without a licence following the death of Jake Opacic in the Gold Coast Hinterland on Friday.

Police allege Mr Opacic, 28, had been arguing with two men on Nerang-Murwillumbah Road, near the Numinbah Correctional Centre just before the crash.

He then mounted his motorcycle and rode off before it crashed about 3 kilometres away. He died at the scene.

One of the men involved in the altercation with Mr Opacic turned himself in at the Laidley Police Station just after 2:00am on Saturday.

The man was refused bail and will appear in Southport Magistrates Court on Monday.

Detectives said they believed Mr Opacic had been at the correctional facility to collect a woman who was being released.

Mr Opacic is the brother of Parramatta Eels centre and former Brisbane Broncos player Tom Opacic.

Investigations are continuing and police are seeking another person in relation to the incident.

Anyone with information is urged to contact police.
