Man charged after dad-of-three, 17, killed in motorbike crash at 150-person funeral

A man has been charged after a teenage dad-of-three died in a motorbike crash while attending a 150-person funeral.

The victim, named locally as Aaron Smith, 17, suffered fatal head injuries after being hit by the vehicle in Kent on the morning of Thursday April 16.

The pedestrian was airlifted to hospital in London where he sadly lost his life.

It is understood the gathering involved a large number of motorcyclists, with reports of some disruptive and anti-social riding,  according to Kent Live.

Cops say they were given "little notice" about the funeral before attending due to "concerns about social distancing" amid the coronavirus outbreak.

A charity drive in Aaron Smith's name has raised over £3,500 (GoFundMe)

Now Robert Varrier, 29, from Sittingbourne, was charged on Sunday with causing death by dangerous driving, causing serious injury by dangerous driving and failing to stop following a road traffic accident.

He is due to appear at Maidstone Crown Court on May 18.

A 21-year-old man from Sittingbourne who was arrested on suspicion of dangerous driving, theft of a motor vehicle and driving without a licence or insurance has been released pending further inquiries.

Heartbroken friends and relatives have taken to social media to pay tribute to the dad-of-three who also leaves behind a wife.

Josh Stevenson wrote publicly on Facebook: "RIP Aaron Smith, such a harsh world we live in.

"So young and talented, can't believe you are gone. Such a shock. Prayers go out to the family.

"You're in a better place now mate. Such sad news.

"Rest easy friend, you're in god's hands now."

Selsey Smith said: "RIP Aaron Smith. God only takes the best, may you get the best bed in heaven.

"Too good for this world but still so young. Heartbroken isn't the word for any of this, I can't imagine how your father's feeling. May god comfort him in this time of devastation.

"Such a polite, handsome, comical boy. Not a bad word to say about you.

"Rest in peace, until we meet again my cuz."

A GoFundMe page has been setup to raise money for Aaron's family and more than £2,200 has already been donated.

Officers are looking to talk to anyone who witnessed the incident, or who has mobile phone or dashcam footage of the vehicles involved.

Kent Police are also investigating reports of people riding motorbikes in a "disruptive and anti-social manner" in the area on the day.

Separate to the collision investigation, officers arrested and charged Thomas Ripley, 24, of Star Lane, Orpington, with dangerous driving, driving without insurance and driving without the correct licence.

He appeared on Saturday at Medway Magistrates' Court where he pleaded guilty and was remanded to appear at Maidstone Crown Court at a date to be set.

Shane Ripley, 32, of Miller Close, Sittingbourne, was charged with the same offences and bailed to appear at Medway Magistrates' Court on June 16.
