A man has been arrested and charged after two cops were left seriously injured following an alleged meat cleaver attack in Wishaw.
The two officers were returning a 10-year-old boy to an address in Greenfield Drive on Sunday evening when they were approached by a 25-year-old.
One constable, aged 24, suffered a serious hand injury which was caused by the bladed weapon while his colleague sustained a serious head injury.
Both men were taken to University Hospital Wishaw following the incident where their conditions were described as stable.
After an overnight stay, the 23-year-old officer has been released while his colleagues remains in hospital awaiting surgery for his hand injuries.
Police Scotland confirmed that a 25-year-old man has now been charged in connection with the incident and is due to appear at Hamilton Sheriff Court tomorrow.
The two uniformed officers have been hailed for their bravery by local area commander Chief Inspector Mark Leonard.
He said: "Both officers were simply doing their job and suddenly found themselves dealing with an incident that was completely unexpected.
"Every police officer knows the circumstances of every incident they attend could change quickly and they are well trained to deal with this.
“However the reality of the situation requires a great amount of alertness, professionalism and bravery. I would like to praise them for that.
"I have spoken to both officers to wish them a speedy recovery and passed on our best wishes from everyone in Lanarkshire Division."
