Man charged after car crashes into Hoffman Estates school

Oct. 27--A man police say was running from a traffic stop has been charged with driving under the influence after he crashed into a Hoffman Estates school early Saturday, authorities said.

Jonathan Carlos Hernandez, 23, of the 500 block of Southwood Circle in Streamwood, has been charged with aggravated DUI, aggravated driving on a revoked license and aggravated fleeing or eluding police, Hoffman Estates police said. He also has been cited in connection with speeding, improper lane usage, improper turning and disobeying a stop sign, police said.

Police said at about 12:30 a.m. on Saturday, Hernandez was driving a 2013 Toyota Scion when he fled from a traffic stop.

Traveling at a high rate of speed, he lost control of the car on Jones Road near Higgins Road and crashed into Eisenhower Junior High School, 800 W. Hassell Road, authorities said.

Hernandez is accused of crashing through a brick wall into the school gym. No one else was injured because the school was not open, police said.

Authorities said Hernandez was taken to a nearby hospital and put under arrest about an hour after the crash. He was then treated and released the next morning, according to police.

The school posted a message on its website Saturday letting the community know about the damage and warning students to be prepared to be outside for both physical education class and sports activities, including boys basketball practice.

"We are very thankful that no one was in our building when this occurred," the statement read.

The school also said structural engineers will be on campus to assess damage and determine what repairs will be needed.

"At this point, we do not know what the impact will be on using the gym," according to the statement.

Hernandez is expected to appear for a bond court hearing Monday.
