An 18-year-old man has been charged with a terrorism offence linked to Syria.

Chafik Aziz, of Wallington, Sutton, was initially arrested on November 4 at Gatwick Airport.

He was detained in police custody on suspicion of being a member of a proscribed organisation.

Aziz was then re-arrested the following day.

On November 6, police obtained a warrant of further detention at Westminster Magistrates’ Court, which allowed him to be held in police custody until 11 November.

After further enquiries, Aziz was charged on November 11 with intending to commit acts of terrorism by preparing to travel to Syria to join the Islamic State, according to Counter Terrorism Policing London.

He has been remanded in police custody and will appear at Westminster Magistrates’ Court on Wednesday.
