Man charged after alleged pursuit through The Junction, Merewether

A man will face court on a range of charges after he allegedly led police on a chase through The Junction and Merewether, reaching an estimated speed of 100km/h.

Police arrested the 49-year-old Merewether man on Wednesday after an investigation into the pursuit last weekend.

The man was allegedly spotted travelling the wrong way along Jenner Parade - a one-way street - on a Honda motorcycle just before 9pm on Sunday.

Police said the rider refused to stop for officers and instead accelerated, starting a pursuit.

Police estimate the motorbike reached a speed of 100km/h on Parkway Avenue, where the rider allegedly sped through a red light.

The chase ended at Dawson Street, where the rider mounted the gutter and crossed a median strip - police were unable to follow.

Investigators found the man in Merewether on Wednesday afternoon and identified him as the rider from Sunday's pursuit.

Nearby, they found the motorcycle that was involved in the chase.

During a search of the man, police allegedly found an indictable amount of methyl-amphetamine and cash.

Inquiries also revealed the man was disqualified from driving until 2058 and was on parole for drug supply offences.

He was charged with eight offences including police pursuit (Skye's Law), drive whilst disqualified, use unregistered vehicle, use uninsured vehicle, disobey one way sign, supply prohibited drug indictable quantity, deal with proceeds of crime and possess prohibited drug.

He is under police guard at hospital for unrelated health matters.
