A man has been charged after 26 snakes, both dead and alive, were found inside a car north of Brisbane.

Police pulled over a car for traffic offences in Bundaberg, 370km north of Brisbane, but made the shock find of 13 live and 13 dead snakes inside the vehicle on March 2.

Some of the snakes, a mix of pythons and green tree snakes, were decomposing while others were slithering freely in the car.

The living snakes were seized by police and taken to an emergency animal hospital for treatment.

The surviving snakes have been given to a local wildlife rescue organisation to be cared for.

A 22-year-old Moore Park Beach man has been charged with 26 counts of animal cruelty.

He will face court next month.
