Man caught with knife in public street jailed for 20 months

A MAN banned from Bargeddie who was caught in public with a knife during the early hours of the morning has been jailed for 20 months.

Dylan Young, 21, was recently ordered by a court to stay out of the Monklands village.

He returned to the dock last Friday and admitted illegal possession of a knife in a Holytown street on July 31.

Mairi-Clare McMillan, prosecuting, told Hamilton Sheriff Court police officers on patrol saw a group of youths at about 4.20am.

She stated: “They made off on seeing the police, but Young was found on a bike, trying to hide behind a van.

“As the officers approached, he said he was sorry, put his hands out in front of him and said he had a knife.

“He was searched and a kitchen knife with a 9cm blade was recovered from his pocket.”

Defence agent Roberto Manini said Young, whose address was given as HMP Addiewell, was dealt with in a separate case at Airdrie Sheriff Court recently.

He was given a community payback order that included a ban on him entering Bargeddie.

Mr Manini said a criminal justice background report prepared for that case referred to his mental health problems and a tendency to self-harm.

But Sheriff Alasdair MacFadyen told Young: “You have a significant criminal record that includes assaults involving a bottle and a blunt object.

“I hear what is said about self-harming, but you are no stranger to resorting to the use of weapons in violent offending.

“Quite separate from that, it is a serious matter to be in a public place in possession of a knife.

“Only a custodial sentence is appropriate, no matter what your difficulties are.”

The sheriff said he would have jailed Young for 30 months but for his early guilty plea.

The sentence was backdated to August 3.
