Man caught with indecent images of kids blames drink and drugs for sick behaviour

A man caught with child sex abuse images blamed drink and drugs for his behaviour.

John Curran told police officers that he would "stumble across stuff" on his iPad and laptop after taking alcohol and cocaine.

Hamilton Sheriff Court heard this week that his home in Beechworth Drive, Newarthill, was raided at 7am on November 4, 2019.

Curran, 26, admitted downloading indecent images of children over a near two-year period from December 9, 2017.

Jennifer McCabe, prosecuting, said he told police officers: "When I take drugs I stumble across stuff I shouldn't. It's bad.

"It happens after I've had a night out, taking alcohol and cocaine.

"I'm going to get off the drink and drugs, and I'm going to seek help."

Cybercrime officers counted 577 child abuse images on Curran's iPad and laptop.

Defence agent Andy Thomson pointed out that Curran has no previous convictions and has not offended since his arrest nearly two years ago.

Sheriff Alasdair MacFadyen told the accused his conviction means he will automatically go on the sex offenders' register.

Sentence was deferred until next month for a criminal justice social work report and a risk assessment.

Curran had his bail continued.
