Man caught on 170-mile road trip told police he wanted 'break from wife and kids'

A BMW driver told police he was taking his car out for a 170-mile road trip in a desperate attempt to escape his wife and children.

Amid the coronavirus lockdown the car was spotted by officers on the A30 near Launceston, Cornwall and stopped on Easter Sunday.

He had told officers he was taking the car for a spin, leaving his three children and wife at home, Cornwall Live reports.

But the officers were not impressed and told the driver it was not an essential journey.

Officers from Alliance Roads Policing later tweeted about the incident.

They said: "Taking your BMW out for a spin on a 170 mile round trip to have a break from the wife and three kids is also not an essential journey! The roads are much quieter but there are still people who don't get it. "

They also reported a driver for driving across the county to pick up a boat - then breaking down on a hill.

"Driving across the county (and then breaking down on a hill) to collect the second hand boat you just bought is not an essential journey either. Driver reported near Bodmin."

While the majority of people across the UK have been abiding by the government's lockdown rules to stay at home, protect the NHS and save lives, some have not.

In Preston a group of lads were moved on by police, after they were filmed playing cricket in a park.

Paul Winstanley filmed the amateur cricketers and his footage shows some of the men are seen sitting on the ground clearly less than two metres apart.

Officers from Lancashire Police arrived shortly afterwards.

They later tweeted: "Nineteen adult males who claimed to be 'bored' have been suitably advised regarding social distancing."
