Man carrying screwdriver jailed after town centre disturbance

A man carrying a screwdriver has been jailed after a disturbance in Motherwell town centre.

Serial offender Christopher Mulholland, 34, admitted unlawful possession of a bladed item.

He appeared from custody via videolink at Hamilton Sheriff Court on Friday.

Jennifer McCabe, prosecuting, said police were called to a disturbance in Brandon Parade around midday on November 2, 2018.

They were given descriptions for two men and were directed to the William Hill betting office.

Mulholland and another man were there.

Asked by police officers if he was carrying anything sharp, Mulholland said he had a screwdriver.

Ms McCabe told the court: “He was searched and the screwdriver was found in his trouser pocket.

“The accused made no reply when charged.”

Mulholland, of Motherwell, has seven pages of previous convictions and solicitor Stephen McQuillan admitted his record “does him no favours”.

Most of the record involves public order offences, but he is currently serving a sentence for domestic abuse.

Sheriff Douglas Brown jailed Mulholland for nine months, reduced from a year because of his guilty plea.
