Man carrying hammer and drugs caught by police sniffer dog at Metrolink stop

A man was caught carrying a hammer and drugs by police officers and sniffer dogs patrolling the Metrolink stations.

Greater Manchester Police's new transport unit have been carrying out searches on trams this week, with the help of sniffer dogs Tia and Holly.

Officers said a man stepped off a tram at the Trafford Bar Metrolink stop and immediately performed a U-Turn on seeing them.

He was then stopped and searched.

The officers discovered a quantity of Class A and B drugs, as well as a hammer and a screwdriver.

A 26-year-old man was later arrested on suspicion of carrying an offensive weapon and possession of a Class A drug.

During the same evening drugs were seized from other commuters.

GMP's transport unit have been working at stations around Victoria, Monsall, Failsworth, Cornbrook and Shudehill all week.

A post on the GMP Trafford North Facebook page said: "Transport Unit and GMP Dogs have deployed across @mcrmetrolink around Victoria, Monsall, Failsworth, Cornbrook & Shudehill.

"Two year police dog Tia is trained to identify cash, explosives, firearms & drugs. She now has very tired nose & off home for a well-earned rest."

GMP's new transport unit launched in November last year in response to antisocial behaviour taking place on the Metrolink.

A team of 50 PCOS have been patrolling the network since 2017, but GMP officers ramped up the number of senior officers working to crackdown on violent incidents and loutish behaviour.

Undercover officers, specialist constables and security staff, alongside PCSOs and Specials, make up the new unit.
