Man captures Liverpool life using betting shop pens

A man captures Liverpool life using just betting shop pens and magic markers.

Artist Sidney Casey, also known as Sid, from Anfield, creates incredible drawings of his day-to-day life and the city as a whole using his simple supplies. Often featuring in his work is the Arkles pub on Anfield Road, Sidney's walking football team at the Anfield Sports and Community Centre and his wife, dog and cat.

The 72-year-old said he has created art for most of his life, including capturing the life of when he worked in factories.

Speaking to the ECHO, he said: "I do it for leisure. Since I was a kid I have been drawing and when I worked in the factories I would try to draw all the canteen people, managers [and other workers]. I used to work in Jacob's factory.

"I would draw all the local pubs." Sidney added: "I get enjoyment out of it."

Sid said all he uses is "just pen and magic markers" for his incredibly detailed work. The 72-year-old creates cartoons in the style of comic strips of his day-to-day life, which always have a dose of the quick-witted Scouse humour.

But his art also includes intricate drawings of the city, with a recent piece on Eurovision with the Liver Building taking centre stage.

Sid told the ECHO: "In the early days I used to use oil painting but I got lazy to mix. It is a lot quicker to use a highlighter or magic marker. I use pens, the blue ones from the betting shop I might add - it saves money."

The 72-year-old always draws the events of his walking football team, who he plays with twice a week, encapsulating the "slip ups", goals and other excitement of the match. He said "there's always something for the cartoon".

Sid added his dog and cat are "characters" in his work and they always make an appearance in his cartoons.

He said: "I get enjoyment out of it and make people laugh".
