Man called Bristol restaurant worker a witch and asked her why she was in England, court hears

A man awaits sentence after he was abusive to staff at a Stokes Croft restaurant.

Martin Hefferman called a member of staff who worked at The Canteen a "horrible witch", Bristol Crown Court heard.

He then asked her "Why are you in England?" and said "go home" repeatedly.

Hefferman, 29, of Embankment Road in Plymouth, pleaded guilty to racially or religously aggravated common assault on November 15 last year.

He was due to be sentenced at Bristol Crown Court today. (Aug 4, 2020)

But Judge Martin Picton was told there was no pre-sentence report available and bailed Hefferman, pending a report, for sentence on September 16.

He said it would be possible to sentence Hefferman via video link.

Hefferman, who appeared in court on crutches due to a foot injury, asked the judge to view CCTV footage of the incident.

The court was shown footage of Hefferman at the bar and a concerned member of staff calling police.

Police arrived on the scene arrested him, he initially failed to identify himself and was abusive to them before laying down in the back of a police car.
