A man has died of burns from a cooking fire in an Englewood apartment building on the South Side.
Marlon Cheeks, 68, was pronounced dead about 1:30 a.m. on Tuesday at Stroger Hospital, the Cook County medical examiner’s office said.
He suffered second and third degree burns about 9:30 p.m. Monday in a cooking fire in a ninth floor apartment in the 900 block of West 63rd Street, Chicago Fire Department spokesman Larry Langford said.
He was taken in critical condition to Stroger, Langford. The fire was limited to a single room, and no other injuries were reported. Chicago police said the fire was contained to the man’s own apartment.
An autopsy released Wednesday found Cheeks died of thermal injuries from a house fire, the medical examiner’s office. His death was ruled accidental.
Police said the cause of the fire is still unknown. The fire department is investigating.
