Man brought to safety after emergency services called to Sunderland bridge and Metros halted

Emergency services were called to Monkwearmouth Railway Bridge early on Friday after reports of a man in distress.

Police and fire services were called to the incident on the bridge over the River Wear in Sunderland at around 6.20am on Friday.

Metro services between Pelaw and South Hylton were also suspended while officers attended the incident on the railway track.

The man was brought to safety at around 8.15am and Metro services resumed shortly afterwards.

A Nexus spokesman said: The person on Monkwearmouth Bridge has been escorted down and is now safe and off track.

"Services should be resuming in next few minutes once power is turned back on."

Metro customers travelling in the affected area were able to use their Metro tickets on buses during the disruption.

Stagecoach accepted Metro tickets on bus services 8, 10, 11 and 20, while Go North East accepted Metro tickets on bus services 9, 35, 35A and 56.
