Man broke student's jaw with 'massive' blow in kebab shop

A road lines painter who broke a student's jaw in two places with a "massive" punch has been jailed.

Oliver Bowen struck Callum Fear in a Weston-super-Mare kebab shop after a perceived problem, Bristol Crown Court heard on January 8.

Initially the extent of Mr Fear's injuries were missed, but he was recalled to hospital after he was diagnosed to have suffered two jaw fractures - one displaced and the other non-displaced.

Bowen, 26, of Jubilee Road in Weston-super-Mare, pleaded guilty to causing grievous bodily harm in December 2018.

'It was a massive punch'

Judge Julian Lambert jailed him for eight months.

He told Bowen: "Fortunately this was short of fatal.

"But it was a massive punch.

"You towered over and you dominated that other man.

"He was no threat at all."

How the incident unfolded

Julian Howells, prosecuting, said Bowen approached Mr Fear in the Deniz's Kebab shop, in St James Street, Weston-super-Mare.

After leading him to a table of men, who seemed to have some kind of problem, Bowen grabbed Mr Fear and felled him with a mighty blow.

Bowen admitted striking him one and said he, himself, was punched to the head by someone after.

Mr Howells said Mr Fear's injuries did not require surgery but he suffered a disruption in university studies, had to give up rugby, and was left with anxiety on nights out.

Edward Hetherington, defending, said alcohol had contributed to his client's rapid change in mood and demeanour.

Mr Hetherington said: "He would like to compensate Mr Fear.

"He would like to apologize face-to-face or in writing in due course."
