Man broke into safe at Nottingham bar after working there for just 10 days

A worker at Roxy Ball Room in Nottingham broke open a safe at the premises and stole items, a court heard.

Max Hamlin, 32, of Poplar Avenue, Sherwood, was working at the venue on May 18 at 7.15pm.

A staff member was alerted the safe had been broken into and CCTV showed the defendant using a tool to break it open and bend over and take items.

Hamlin had been employed there for ten days. He was interviewed and accepted he broke into the safe. He said he went into the "drugs box" and took a couple of packets and went back to work.

He initially used a hammer on the safe, then resorted to using his hands, and tried to push back the safe door to try and cover up the fact he had been there.

Nothing was inside the packets when he opened them at home.

After the theft, he had a bottle of wine, fell asleep and was woken by police, Nottingham Magistrates' Court heard on Friday (June 4).

He was a cocaine user but was not addicted and used it now and again.

Sanjay Jerath, prosecuting, told magistrates: "It was a breach of trust. He was employed by the complainant".

Hamlin attended court to enter guilty pleas to theft of drugs packaging of a value unknown and causing criminal damage to the safe.

The court heard, in mitigation, that Hamlin's father passed away last April. Hamlin was furloughed and drinking a lot and taking cocaine on and off. He was getting help from an organisation called Change, Grow, Live and was staying in Cambridgeshire.

When he returned to Nottingham, he went back to the hospitality industry and started working at Roxy Ball Room. He has since been dismissed and £180 was deducted from his salary to compensate the complainant.

Hamlin was put on a 12-month community order with 80 hours of unpaid work, ordered to pay £85 costs and a £95 victim surcharge.
