Man breaks in to fish and chip shop then steals charity boxes hours after coronavirus lockdown

A man broke into a popular chippy and stole the charity box on the counter just hours after it had closed for the coronavirus lockdown.

CCTV footage captured the moment a man on a bicycle forced open a window and lunged for the collection tin at the Fivestar Fish Bar in Llandaff North, Cardiff.

The man, who approached the shop on Station Road on a bicycle on Wednesday evening, used brute force to prise the window open. He then squeezed through the tight space head first and dangled himself into the shop before stealing the two charity boxes left on the counter.

Six hours later, at around 3.20am on Thursday, the same man returned and this time managed to get inside the shop. He was spooked off after the alarm went off and ran out empty handed.

Owner Bushra Shahzad, who took the shop on 16 years ago with her husband, said they had decided to close their doors on Wednesday for the safety of their staff and customers.

Mrs Shahzad said: "It's really sad to see people whose business has to close for the safety of others and then you have idiots like him who want to rob your place.

"We want everyone to be safe in this difficult time. My husband Shahz has been there for 16 years, he is well known in the area and is just very concerned for the neighbourhood."

A number of other businesses across south Wales have been targeted by thieves during the three-week lockdown ordered by Boris Johnson.

South Wales Police said it was investigating the incident.
