Man blasts Strictly Come Dancing as “unapologetic rubbish” in scathing one-star review

Some people love watching celebrities in glitzy costumes try their hand at ballroom dancing. Others, not so much.

Despite being one of the most watched shows on British television, some people aren’t impressed by the return of Strictly Come Dancing, going as far as to leave scathing reviews of it online.

Last week’s Strictly drama clearly wasn’t good enough entertainment for one viewer, who blasted the show as “truly dreadful,” while admitting that his wife “loves it.”

Giving the show one star on Google reviews, the man wrote: “This is a truly dreadful, dreadful show. I mean inexcusably dreadful.

“The premise of it is that dance as a form of human expression can be commodified and rated. This is of course complete nonsense.

“Perhaps even more unforgivable is the show insisting contestants reduce themselves to acting as excited and innocent teenagers. Stars in their eyes they jump with joy, laugh too loud and of course thank their mummies for all their loving support.

“If you listen carefully you can hear professional whoopers and cheerers in the audience. The BBC must have a whooping and cheering department to supply dead shows like this with some semblance of life.”

He continues: “The show really is unapologetic rubbish. It coexists at the very bottom of the barrel alongside Love Island and US sitcoms with which it shares an odious attachment to the lowest common denominator.

“The wife loves it … as do hundreds of thousands of others like her. So I’m sure the BBC will continue churning it out. A depressing prospect indeed…”

But the popular BBC show has also received hundreds of positive reviews online, with one person calling it "the best show on TV."

"It never ceases to amaze me how such a show can go out live week after week without any errors," one person wrote.

"The band and singers are superb, the studio sets and ligthing is also superb, plus Tess and Claudia are great too."

Another said: "I love this show, the professional dancers are amazing, the costumes the band all fantastic."

It comes as the BBC has confirmed Bruno Tonioli will return as a judge after uncertainty over travel restrictions.

Anton Du Beke, the longest-serving professional dancer, stepped in in Bruno's absence this year.

Bruno said: “I am absolutely delighted to be back on the judging panel for the Strictly Arena Tour for the first time in two years.

“I’ve missed my fellow judges, I’ve missed the glitz and glamour of the tour and I’ve missed the amazing audiences that come to see us all over the country – I hope you have missed me too.

“I cannot wait to be back alongside Shirley, Craig, the celebs, and the pros."

Strictly Come Dancing will air on BBC One at 7.15pm this Saturday
