Man blasted in leg outside takeaway in third Levenshulme shooting this year

A man was blasted in the leg outside a takeaway in the third shooting in Levenshulme this year.

The Manchester Evening News understands the victim was hit in the thigh in the incident, but is not currently co-operating with police inquiries.

It was the latest in a worrying trend of incidents in the south Manchester neighbourhood.

The shooting happened in evening rush hour yesterday outside the Canadian Charcoal takeaway at the junction of the A6 Stockport Road and Matthews Lane.

The victim was taken to hospital but his injuries are not believed to be life threatening.

A takeaway worker, who gave his name as Awat, said: "I heard what I though was fireworks.

"When I came back, a guy was on the floor.

"Many people were around him. He was shouting in pain, he was screaming. He was tensing his arms in pain."

"He was between 22 and 25. Eight or nine people were around him.

"After a few minutes police and ambulance came. They took him away.

"That's the first time something like this has happened."

It is not clear if the shooting is linked to two others in the area.

In June, a gunman blasted a home an an Audi Q7 car during an early morning attack on Slade Lane.

No one was injured but up to 15 shots were fired.

In July, six people were arrested after a man was hit by a car and there were reports of gunshots in Merlwood Avenue.

A man in his 40s was found by officers with a serious leg injury following the collision.

A 22-year man later turned up at hospital with injuries to his head.

A GMP spokesperson said about the latest incident: "At around 5.15pm on Monday, October 7, police were called to Stockport Road in Levenshulme to reports that a man had been shot.

"The man has been taken to hospital for treatment; however his injuries are not believed to be life-threatening at this time.

"Police are currently in attendance and enquiries are ongoing."

Witnesses - or anyone with information - is asked to call GMP on 101; or Crimestoppers, anonymously, on 0800 555 111.
