Man blames BMW crash on 'lack of experience' - after drinking session in pub

A St George man crashed his car into a motorbike after a drunken night in a pub.

Domantas Karvelis, of Clouds Hill Road, drove his grey BMW into the back of the motorbike in Marlborough Street on February 22.

The 22-year-old appeared at Bristol Magistrates’ Court on March 10 and admitted he had 81mcg of alcohol in 100ml of breath – more than double the limit of 35mcg.

Prosecutor Jeremy Oliver said: “At 2.50am, a police officer on duty on Marlborough Street came across the aftermath of an RTC between a BMW driven by Mr Karvelis and a motorbike.

“It appeared to be a minor collision and no one was injured, but on speaking to Mr Karvelis, the officer could smell alcohol.”

Karvelis blew a positive reading and told police he had hit the motorbike due to “a lack of experience”.

He only had a provisional licence, but said he had been driving while accompanied by a full licence holder.

The defendant admitted he had been drinking in a pub over the previous hours.

Representing himself in court, Karvelis said he did not wish to offer any mitigation.

Presiding Justice Dr Giles Brown said: “This was quite a high reading and given the collision with the motorcyclist, this could have been considerably worse.”

He banned Karvelis from driving for 20 months and ordered him to pay a £307 fine, £85 in prosecution costs and £32 victim surcharge – totalling £424.
