Man behind Meghan Markle and Harry's doc says it 'wasn't entirely rosy behind the scenes'

The journalist who interviewed Meghan Markle and Prince Harry for their Africa documentary says he "knew that everything wasn't entirely rosy behind the scenes".

Tom Bradby followed their couple on their 10-day trip to the continent and conducted one-to-one interviews with both of them on hard-hitting issues including mental health and the pressures of royal life.

During the hour-long ITV special Harry admitted rumours of a rift between him and brother Prince William were true and Meghan said she's wasn't okay .

Speaking outside Buckingham Palace in an interview for Good Morning America, Tom said: "I just told the story that was in front of me really.

"Anything like this is always story telling as you know, and I went intending to make a documentary that was always going to be about their work in Africa and then a little bit about where they are in life.

"I knew that everything wasn't entirely rosy behind the scenes, that's true, but all the same I sort of had intended to turn up probably doing a more conventional journalistic job.

"I told them before I was going to have to put some particularly pointed questions.

"But I think the reality I found was just a couple who just seemed a bit bruised and vulnerable. I think with mental health, you have to be very careful what words you use but that was the story I found and it seemed the right journalistic thing to do, to tell that story as empathetically as I could.

"You know as well as I do as a journalist, there are different moments and that just felt like the approach I should take on this occasion."

The documentary has caused a huge debate around the world, with many praising the couple for speaking so honestly about subjects not normally addressed by members of the royal family.

But others have criticised them for "moaning" from such a place of privilege, especially while in a country like South Africa.

Insiders claim William and other members of the royal family are extremely worried about Meghan and Harry after seeing the show, adding that the breakdown in the brothers' relationship was "desperately sad".

They said: "They’re going completely separate ways and Harry is the one who seems to be visibly struggling.

“It seems the boy who walked behind their mother’s coffin, which is so vividly seared onto the nation’s consciousness, has never fully recovered, which is an utter tragedy.

"Charles has sought to help the young men, even that hasn’t helped.

“Many inside the family have said how seeing her sons drifting apart would be the last thing Diana would have wanted.”
