Man becomes 'trapped in his car' after three foot deep road flood in Co Down

A man became trapped in his car after heavy rain hit Co Down today.

It's understood the 38-year-old driver had tried to travel around the water but had become stuck as flooding hit parts of the country this afternoon forcing a number of roads to close.

The rescue unfolded on the Finnebrogue Road in Downpatrick, Co Down , around 1pm.

Speaking to Belfast Live Northern Ireland Fire and Rescue Group Commander William Johnston said: "Fire crews arrived and a male was trapped in his vehicle with the flood water around two to three feet deep.

"We were able to rescue the occupant from his vehicle without injury."

A yellow warning for rain had been issued for Saturday in Northern Ireland and came to an end at 8pm this evening.

Meanwhile in the south, temperatures will drop to a bitter -2C tonight ahead of snow potentially arriving next week.

Weather chiefs have revealed that “wintry showers” are expected in places on Monday, while rain “may turn to sleet or snow” a little later in the week.
