Man banned from OkCupid pleads guilty to sending white powder, threats to company's office

DALLAS _ A Massachusetts man has pleaded guilty to sending white powder and anthrax threats to the Dallas offices of OkCupid after he was banned from the dating service.

Liam MacLeod, 47, of Beverly was banned in September 2017 after repeatedly violating the company's terms of service, according to federal court documents.

An anonymous letter sent to OkCupid's Dallas P.O. box after MacLeod's profile was banned contained white powder.

"Ban me will ya," it read. "Welcome to the wonderful world of ANTHRAX."

Eight more envelopes arrived in the following months, according to a criminal complaint, some of which contained smears of a bloodlike substance and threats referencing the account's suspension. All were postmarked in Boston.

None of the envelopes contained hazardous materials, Dallas County health officials determined.

Authorities were able to match details from the letters to information from MacLeod's account, and he was arrested in February.

MacLeod pleaded guilty to two counts of mailing threatening communications and two counts of conveying false information and hoaxes. His sentencing is scheduled for September.
