Woman who started easyJet mid-air ‘riot’ with daughter while drunk on pink gin jailed

A woman has been jailed for three months after she and her daughter started a drunken mid-air ‘riot’ on a holiday flight to Morocco.

Karin Parkes, 57, and former civil servant Carrie Parkes, 35, triggered a fight involving up to 20 people after they and friends were told off by cabin crew for swearing whilst intoxicated on wine and duty free pink gin, the Manchester Evening News reports.

Terrified staff on the easyJet flight which had 186 passengers on board had tried to calm the two women and asked them to behave but mother of two Carrie stuck her fingers in her ears and said: ‘I’m not listening to that vile c***.’

A cabin manager also urged the group to refrain from using bad language.

The captain of the aircraft which was flying from Manchester to Agadir diverted to Casablanca after staff told him the rear of the cabin was ’out of control’.

The women were removed after the plane landed in Casablanca - as other passengers booed.

At Minshull Street Crown Court, Manchester, Karin of Blackpool, Lancs, was convicted of assault and being drunk on aircraft, jailed for three months. and was also banned from easyJet flights for ten years.

Carrie who was convicted of being drunk on an aircraft was given three months jail suspended for 12 months and was also issued with a ten year ban.

A third passenger Jonathan Thomas, 38, also from Blackpool was given three months suspended for a year with an order to complete 150 hours unpaid work after he was convicted of being drunk on an aircraft. He was also banned from easyJet flights for ten years and ordered to pay £620 costs.

Prosecuting, John Richards earlier told the court the flight’s cabin manager and his colleagues had repeatedly asked the group of men and two women to keep the noise down.

“Carrie Parkes told him ‘you can f*** off c***'” Mr Richards said.

“The manager challenged her behaviour and he came to the conclusion that she was intoxicated so made the decision to advise staff not to serve any more drinks.”

As staff tried to clear the galley, they discovered a bottle of pink gin near Thomas, who ignored them when he was asked to hand it over.

After asking them to keep quiet once again, Karin then became involved - and swung at a staff member.

Thomas was described as ‘extremely angry’ and ‘right in the face’ of staff.

Sentencing Thomas, Judge John Edwards said: “This was an extremely challenging flight for the crew of that easyJet flight.

“I viewed the footage of somebody’s mobile phone and it was a scene of chaos.

“They described it as the worst of their careers. Your behaviour was unedifying and boorish.”
