Man bailed following stabbing in Wigan that left victim needing surgery

A 31-year-old man who was arrested following a stabbing in Wigan has been bailed.

Police were called to Victoria Road, in Platt Bridge, just before 5.30am on Thursday morning, May 6, to reports that someone had been stabbed.

Paramedics rushed to the area and took a man in his 40s to hospital with 'serious injuries'.

The victim remains in hospital, after going through surgery for his injuries.

On Thursday, police investigations were focused on a small block of flats on Victoria Road, with a side entrance cordoned off by police.

GMP arrested a 31-year-old man over the attack on Friday, but have now released the suspect on bail, pending further enquiries.

A spokesperson for the force said: "At around 5.25am on Thursday 6 May 2021, police were called to Victoria Road, Platt Bridge, and a man in his 40s was taken to hospital where he remains after surgery.

"A 31-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of section 18 assault and has been bailed pending further enquiries."

Neighbours told the Manchester Evening News that they heard 'shouting and screaming' before emergency services arrived on the scene.

One Victoria Road resident said: "I heard this shouting and I thought someone was arguing about something.

"I first started to hear it at about 5am. I went back in the house and saw the police come and an ambulance.

"You get the odd police car coming now and then but this has never happened on this street - a stabbing.

"No one has been stabbed here while I've lived here."
