Man attacked women outside store after massive shoplifting spree

A Hengrove man has been jailed after attacking two women outside a Staple Hill shop.

Anton Varga, of Wharnecliffe Gardens, shoplifted £421.87 worth of items in a spate of nine thefts in Bristol between July 21 and August 13.

The 33-year-old was arrested after assaulting two women outside Church's Newsagents in Broad Street on August 13.

He was jailed for 22 weeks at Bristol Magistrates' Court on August 14, after admitting the assaults and thefts.

Varga had only recently come out of prison when he started his latest shoplifting spree.

He had been handed five weeks in jail on April 14, after stealing £128 worth of Jack Daniels honey whisky from Broad Street's Tesco Metro while on a suspended sentence.

Within weeks of his release, he began stealing again, taking £75 worth of washing detergent, coffee, crisps and meat from Sainsbury's on July 21.

Three days later, he stole a £79 Zanussi vacuum cleaner from the Original Factory Shop on Broad Street, as well as £80 worth of washing detergent and meat from Sainsburys.

Varga then shoplifted £45 worth of detergent from Tesco on July 31.

His next theft was on August 9, when he took £10 worth of steak from Sainsbury's.

He targeted Church's Newsagents on the morning of August 13, stealing £20.62 worth of Mayfair Blue cigarettes.

Outside the newsagents, he assaulted two women by beating.

On the same morning, he stole three packets of lamb steaks worth £17.55 from Tesco Express and 14 bottles of detergent worth £74 from Co-op.

He also shoplifted a "tasty slice pasty" and two packets of cigarettes worth £20.70 from the KSK convenience store.

In his court hearing, Varga was told he would be imprisoned "because you assaulted a lone vulnerable female and have a long list of similar theft offences".

He must pay £50 in compensation to each of the two women he attacked.
