Man 'attacked with hammer' during burglary in West Belfast

A man has been arrested on suspicion of gaining access to a property in West Belfast and attacking the occupant with a hammer.

The PSNI said it had received a report of a burglary in the Whiterock Crescent area on Wednesday morning.

Detective Sergeant Corrigan said: “We received a report, at around 7.50am, that a man had forced entry to a property and attacked a male occupant.

“The occupant was hit on the forehead with a hammer, and has since been taken to hospital, by colleagues from the Ambulance Service, for treatment to a head wound."

He added: “We have arrested a 30-year-old man on suspicion of aggravated burglary with intent to steal.  He remains in custody at this time, assisting with enquiries.

“Our enquiries continue and I would appeal to anyone with information, or who noticed any suspicious activity in the area, to contact us on 101 quoting reference number 323 of 20/05/20.”

Information can also be provided to the independent charity Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111, which is 100% anonymous and gives people the power to speak up and stop crime.
