Man attacked nurse in hospital and 'swore on his children's lives' that he would kill his own mother

A paranoid schizophrenic who 'swore on his children's lives' that 'as soon as he was out of hospital he would kill his mother' has appeared in court.

Anthony Reid, 34, also assaulted a nurse as he became aggressive when doctors discussed his medication.

Reid was being treated at a mental health unit at Salford Royal hospital in August last year.

Manchester Crown Court heard that a probation officer was also present, as Reid's medication was being discussed by medical staff.

Reid began to make threats that he would kill his mother, who has since passed away.

He said that 'as soon as he was out of the hospital he would kill her'.

Asked what she had done, Reid said 'what hasn't she done'.

After being asked how he would kill her, he said 'you don't need to know that'.

Reid then 'swore on his children's lives' that he would do it, prosecutor Neil Ronan said.

The court heard that Reid has a previous conviction for assaulting his mother.

The probation officer reported the threat to police.

There was no evidence to determine whether Reid's mother was made aware of the threat, the court heard.

A few weeks later, Reid was still at the unit.

A nurse felt a 'hard blow' to her right bicep, which felt like she had been 'punched'.

She saw Reid walking away, and was told 'he has just stabbed you with something'.

Reid had attacked her with a plastic razor handle, which did not have any blade attached to it.

Back in his room, Reid had called the police saying that he had 'stabbed' a member of staff, and that he was 'going to kill someone by the end of the day'.

Staff decided to take him to the segregation unit, and Reid began to 'resist aggressively', causing a nurse to be 'pushed against the side of the wall'.

No serious injuries were caused.

Defending, Julian Goode said that as Reid's culpability for his offending was reduced because of his 'long standing mental disorder'.

Mr Goode said that as Reid had been in custody since October, a sentence should be passed to allow his immediate release.

Judge Timothy Smith agreed, and sentence Reid to six months in jail, a term which he has already served while on remand.

The judge said there was 'no real risk' of the threat Reid made to his mother actually being carried out.

Reid, of no fixed address, pleaded guilty to making threats to kill and section 39 assault.
