Emergency services were called to Church Lane, Woodchurch, just before 6pm after a man was found unconscious in the street.

Merseyside Police said the man, in his 20s, had been assaulted and was now in a serious but stable condition in hospital.

A spokeswoman for the force said there “was an altercation in the Arrowe Park pub on Arrowe Park Road which allegedly involved a number of males and may be connected to the assault”.

Church Lane remained cordoned off by police on Sunday afternoon, with a team of scientific support officers examining a section of pathway covered by a forensics tent.

Appealing for anyone with details to contact police, Detective Inspector Emma Kerrigan said: “Enquiries are in the very early stages to establish what has taken place.

“I would urge anyone who was in the area of Church Lane and in the Arrowe Park pub at around 5.30pm onwards to please come forward and help with our enquiries, as your evidence could be vital to the investigation.

“I would also appeal to drivers and people with CCTV in the area who might have captured something on their dash cam and CCTV to come forward and speak to us.”
