Man attacked by shark that tore huge chunk out of surfboard - causing horror injury

A man in his 20s has been bitten by a shark and had his surfboard mauled while surfing at a popular tourist beach in Australia.

His blue and white board was photographed with a huge chunk missing from its side after the attack at 4.30pm local time today.

The man was helped from the water by other beachgoers and was treated by paramedics for a serious arm injury.

The man was airlifted to John Hunter Hospital in Newcastle, New South Wales, as is said to be in a serious but stable condition.

NSW Ambulance Inspector Andrew Beverley said: "Much praise must be given to bystanders who helped the man from the water and provided that crucial initial first aid.

"It was a significant bite and the man suffered serious injuries to his arm as a result.

"It might be cold at the moment but it's important to always be aware of your surrounding in the water, even in winter."

Police are due to liaise with the Department of Primary Industry to investigate the circumstances surrounding the incident and nearby Killick And Crescent Head beaches have been closed by Surf Life SavingNew South Wales, as a precuation.

Crescent Head, where the attack took place, is a popular spot for water sports and is frequented by surfing enthusiasts for its waves.
