Man arrested trying to smuggle drugs into Spain under his wig

A man was arrested after being stopped by police during an attempt to smuggle half a kilo of cocaine into Spain by hiding it underneath an "oversized" toupee.

Spanish police said the man arrived in Barcelona on a flight from Bogota, Colombia, and attracted attention as he looked nervous and had a disproportionately large hairpiece under his hat.

After stopping him they found a package stuck to his head with about 30,000 euros, £27,000, worth of cocaine.

A police statement said: "There is no limit to the inventiveness of drug traffickers trying to mock controls.”

Police shared a photo of a middle-aged man still wearing the toupee though with his eyes blocked in the image.

It gave no more details of his identity following his detention at Josep Tarradellas Airport.

Over 100 kilos of cocaine were seized by Spanish police at the Barcelona-El Prat airport in 2018 and the Colombian man was detained at the end of June.
