SA Police officers arrested one man and are searching for his passenger following the pursuit of a speeding ute towing an excavator. (ABC News)

A man has been arrested and police are searching for his passenger after the pursuit of a speeding ute towing an excavator in Adelaide's northwest overnight.

SA Police attempted to pull over the ute in Ferryden Park around 4:50am on Friday, when the passenger threw a pair of bolt cutters at the patrol car.

The driver refused to stop and there was a brief police pursuit before the vehicle was abandoned on the side of the road at Pooraka.

The driver ran to a nearby address and police cordoned off the area and found the suspect inside the house.

A 41-year-old Paralowie man was arrested and charged with dangerous driving to escape police, illegal use and unlicenced.

He did not apply for bail and will appear in the Port Adelaide Magistrates Court on Monday.

The ute was reported stolen overnight from a Dry Creek address, while the excavator and trailer were reported stolen from Woodville Park.

Search continues for passenger

Police believe the passenger ran from the ute near the intersection of Montague Road and Main North Road.

They searched the area but could not find him.

He was wearing a balaclava, black puffer jacket, black pants and shoes.

Anyone who saw someone matching this description in the area around 5:00am should contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
