Man arrested over viral video allegedly involving ex-Bristol Rovers striker Oli McBurnie

A 24-year-old man has been arrested after a video which appeared to show former Bristol Rovers striker Oli McBurnie involved a street fight went viral online.

The clip shows a man stamping on the phone used to film the video before fighting with another man.

North Yorkshire Police confirmed a 24-year-old man had been arrested in connection with the alleged assault.

He remains in custody after the 21-year-old victim sustained facial injuries.

"The happened shortly before 8.30pm on Saturday, May 8 on High Street in Knaresborough," a North Yorkshire Police spokesman said.

"The 24 year old arrested man remains in custody at this time.

"Anyone who witnessed the incident is asked to contact police. Dial 101, press 1 and pass information to the force control room, quoting reference number 12210115038."

McBurnie, aged 24, plays for Sheffield United in the Premier League. He joined the Blades from Swansea City for a fee in the region of £20million.

Swansea loaned McBurnie to Rovers in 2016, when he made five appearances in League Two without scoring.

McBurnie has scored seven goals in the Premier League since his move to Bramall Lane, and he has earned 16 caps for Scotland.

"Officials at Sheffield United are aware that police are now involved following the emergence of a video circulating on social media over the weekend and as a club we will do all we can to assist enquiries, as well as continue our own investigation,” a spokesman for Sheffield United said.
