A man has been arrested on suspicion of racially aggravated criminal damage after “No Blacks” was daubed on the door of a home in Salford, police said.
The 54-year-old was being questioned in connection with the incident which made headlines after home owner Jackson Yamba complained on social media about police inaction five days after it appeared.
The trainee lawyer said his 10-year-old son David was “traumatised” by the incident.
The pair had only moved into the flat, along with their friend five days before the vandalism took place on 8 February.
The incident drew national attention after Mr Yamba posted a picture of the graffiti on Twitter complaining Greater Manchester Police (GMP) had yet to take action.
“My front door in Salford was painted over a week ago with this abhorrent racist graffiti - after reporting it to @gmpolice they still haven't been here to investigate,” he wrote.
“How do I assure my traumatised 10 year old that he is safe in his home?”
Mr Yamba later thanked the community after they rallied round in support.
The Salford Reds rugby league team has offered them special guest tickets to a home game and invited them to meet the team.
GMP said the suspect was being questioned by officers.
“While we have a man in custody, our enquiries into this deplorable crime are very much ongoing,” superintendent Howard Millington of GMP’s Salford division said. I want to emphasise that we are acutely aware of the strength of public feeling surrounding this incident.
“Let me reassure people that where incidents of this nature take place, we will always pursue a prosecution.”
