Police in Georgia have arrested a man for the alleged murder of Australian woman Shanae Brooke Edwards, who went missing in the capital Tbilisi in July.

Ms Edwards, disappeared on July 30 in Mtatsminda Park in Tbilisi before she was supposed to meet with friends.

Her disappearance triggered a massive search operation after a friend in California received a call from her while she was being attacked and heard her screaming for help.

The friend said Ms Brooke was heard saying over the phone "please let me go, OK ... just let me go".

Local officials and friends discovered her body in woodland the next day.

The Georgian Interior Ministry said in a statement that forensic experts matched genetic traces left at the scene with a 33-year-old Georgian man known as 'R.M'.

"As a result of genetic examination report the identity of the offender was unequivocally confirmed," the statement said.

The statement also said a knife was found by police.

According to the statement, the man faces between seven and 15 years in prison if he is convicted.

Ms Brooke grew up in Warrnambool, in Victoria's south-west, and went to Brauer College.

She was described by friends as an animal-lover who rescued stray cats and a keen motorbike rider.
