Man charged with murder over human remains found in SA mid-north

Police say the last sighting of Martin Meffert was on February 8 2005.

Police have laid murder charges against a man after the remains of Martin Craig Meffert were found in a fireplace in Terowie, in South Australia's mid-north.

The 30-year-old man was arrested today in relation to Mr Meffert's 2005 death.

Mr Meffert's partial skeletal remains were found in a fireplace of a Terowie house in 2013.

Major Crime Investigation branch Detective Superintendent Des Bray said the man was 16-years-old at the time of the alleged murder but the Director of Public Prosecutions had given police permission to charge him as an adult.

He will face Port Pirie Magistrates Court on Tuesday.

Mr Meffert was 23-years-old when he was last seen on a bus going from Adelaide to Terowie, south-east of Peterborough, in February 2005.

He was never reported missing.

Superintendent Bray said the police's focus would now turn to another man and woman who allegedly stole $136,000 from Mr Meffert's bank account after his death by withdrawing fortnightly disability payments from a Peterborough ATM.

They were interviewed by police today but not charged.

Police also released CCTV vision of a man wearing a black jacket taking money from the ATM.

Superintendent Bray said someone would recognise the man.

A $200,000 reward is available for information that leads to a murder conviction and finding the rest of Mr Meffert's body.

"Terowie's a pretty small place so everyone should know that jacket," Superintendent Bray said.

He said finding the remains was "very important for his [Mr Meffert's] family".

Police have searched several locations near Terowie without luck.

Superintendent Bray read out a statement written by Mr Meffert's father.

"Martin was a dearly loved and missed son and brother," he said.

"Although I am relieved that a person has been arrested for his murder, I will not find more relief until the person is behind bars for the rest of his life."

Anyone with information that would assist the investigation should call Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
