Man arrested over firing firework at Gardai during Dublin anti-lockdown protest

One man has been arrested this morning in connection to the anti-lockdown protest in Dublin on Saturday.

It is understood that he has been arrested specifically over the firework attack on gardai during the violent protest.

The 30-year-old is the 24th person to be arrested and is currently detained under Section 30 of the Offences Against the State Act, 1939 at Irishtown Garda Station.

The significant update comes after huge searches all over Dublin in the days following the riot.

The clashes with gardaí on Grafton Street on Saturday, organised through social media, saw 23 arrests and three officers treated for injuries suffered.

Scary footage captured on smartphones revealed the aggressive actions of some protestors who aimed rockets, including fireworks, at the gardai policing the event.

One officer sustained a broken ankle during the events at the weekend.

It’s understood that the officer’s injuries are so serious he will have to have pins inserted into his leg and foot.

A garda spokesman said this morning: "A man his 30s was arrested this morning, Tuesday 02 March 2021 and is currently detained under Section 30 of the Offences Against the State Act, 1939 at Irishtown Garda Station.

"The investigation is ongoing."
