Man charged with bomb murder of greyhound trainer

John Burrows, here with his wife Shirley, was killed by an explosive device.

A man has been charged with the murder of another man in Lithgow, in the NSW central west, who was killed by an explosive device two years ago.

John Burrows, 58, died when an improvised bomb was detonated as he approached the garage of his mother's Portland property in July 2015.

Fragments of the device, which police described as sophisticated and locally sourced, landed as far as 200 metres away.

Police have previously said they believed Mr Burrows was the victim of a targeted attack.

He was a local power plant employee as well as a greyhound racing trainer.

Police said a box for a Hills-brand garden sprayer was used to cover or hide the explosive device from sight.

The strike force which was set up to investigate Mr Burrows' death said earlier this year they believed the device was radio-controlled.

They also believed someone knew Mr Burrows would be near the garage at that particular time and "you could set your watch by his routines".

Last year on the first anniversary of Mr Burrows' death, his family, who still live in Portland, appealed for information.

This morning, a 70-year-old Portland man was charged with Mr Burrows' murder and was refused bail.

He will appear at Lithgow Local Court today.
