Man arrested over death of Francis 'Frankie' Dunne found decapitated at derelict house in Co Cork

A man has been arrested in connection with the brutal death of a man found decapitated and with no arms in Co Cork.

The body of Francis 'Frankie' Dunne, 64, was discovered at a derelict house on Boreenmanna Road on December 28, 2019.

A man, in his 50s, is now being quizzed at Gurranabraher Garda Station after being brought in on Monday morning over the gruesome death of Mr Dunne.

A spokesman said: "Gardaí investigating the murder of Francis Dunne, whose body was discovered at a derelict house on Boreenmanna Road, Co. Cork on the 28 December, 2019 have arrested a man in connection with the investigation.

"The man, aged in his 50s, was arrested this morning, 13th July, 2020.

"He is currently detained at Gurranabraher Garda Station under Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act, 1984."

Mr Dunne was well-known to local volunteers who provide services for the homeless.

Speaking last December, Caitriona Twomey, who runs the Penny Dinners charity in Cork, said: “We knew Frankie very well and he was a gentle soul.

“We’re all very saddened. We’re devastated it is Frankie because he is gentle, harmless and doesn’t bother anyone."

At the time, gardai said it is not clear if the victim, from Blackrock, was killed at the scene or if his body was disposed of on the grounds of the two-storey detached period house.

The building has lain idle for more than a year, but sporadically homeless people had been seen outside.

The murder probe was launched after a postmortem was carried out at Cork University Hospital by locum State Pathologist Dr Heidi Okkers.
