Man arrested over alleged sneak theft of elderly widow's handbag in Wishaw cemetery

Police have arrested a man after an elderly widow was allegedly robbed of her handbag while visiting her husband’s grave in a Wishaw cemetery.

Officers made the arrest on Monday following the alleged incident in Cambusnethan Cemetery earlier this month.

A Police Scotland spokesman said: “Police confirm that a 54-year-old man has been arrested and charged with theft and fraud following an alleged sneak in theft at Cambusnethan Cemetery, Wishaw on Wednesday, October 6.

“The elderly victim, aged 84, was attending her late husband’s grave when the suspect allegedly stole her handbag from her unlocked vehicle which was parked in the cemetery grounds.

“Wishaw Community Police officers conducted the investigation and identified the suspect and arrested him.”

Sgt Jim Mutter, from Wishaw Police Office, added: “I would ask the community to report any person they see acting in suspicious circumstances and to ensure that they lock and secure their vehicles.

“If you are parking I would always encourage that items such as handbags or other valuables are kept in your possession or hidden away in a safe and secure place.”
