Joanne Howell's ex-partner charged with her 2007 bashing murder

Joanne Howell died in April, 2007.

A man has appeared in court charged with the murder of Melbourne woman Joanne Howell, more than 13 years after she was bashed and strangled to death.

Ms Howell, 51, died on April 21, 2007 after she was found with fatal injuries at her Hughesdale apartment.

Her former partner Paul Charlton was arrested at his home in the south-west Victorian town of Casterton today.

An inquest into the matter in 2011 found that her former partner was likely to have been involved in her death, but he was not charged until this afternoon.

Police last month appealed for information on the "solvable" death, saying they were "on the cusp" of solving the case.

Mr Charlton, 66, appeared at a filing hearing in the Hamilton Magistrates' Court this afternoon.

The court heard that phone intercepts will form part of the evidence against Mr Charlton.

He is yet to enter a plea.

Mr Charlton has been remanded in custody and is expected to appear at the Melbourne Magistrates' Court on June 24.

Police are still appealing for anyone with information about Ms Howell's death to contact Crime Stoppers.
