Man arrested over 1980 murder in Kensington

A man has been arrested on suspicion of murder over a death in west London in June 1980.

Anthony Bird, 41, was found dead by Metropolitan Police officers at a property in Kensington Gardens Square on June 6 1980 following concerns for the safety of the occupant.

A post-mortem examination confirmed the cause of death was strangulation.

On Wednesday, Metropolitan Police detectives arrested a 59-year-old man at a west London police station.

He was released under investigation over the murder, but detained under the Mental Health Act.

The Met’s Specialist Crime Command is appealing for any relatives of Mr Bird to contact them on 020 8785 8309
