Man arrested on suspicion of terrorism offences in Manchester

A man has been arrested in Manchester on suspicion of terrorism offences.

The 21-year-old is among five detained this morning (December 30) on suspicion of the commission, preparation or instigation of an act of terrorism, the Metropolitan Police said.

A 19-year-old and two other men were arrested on suspicion of the same offence in Peterborough and North London.

The fifth, also 19, was also arrested in Peterborough on suspicion of encouraging terrorism.

They were arrested by officers from the Met's Counter Terrorism Command along with colleagues from the Counter Terrorism Policing North West unit and the Eastern Region Special Operations Unit.

All five men remain in police custody.

A Met Police spokesman said the arrests were pre-planned and stressed 'there is not believed to be any imminent threat to the public'.

Scotland Yard also stressed that the arrests are not linked to London Bridge attack at Fishmongers' Hall in November or the forthcoming New Year's Eve celebrations.
