A murder investigation has been launched after an inmate was found dead in Wandsworth prison, west London.

Metropolitan police detectives said the dead man was thought to be in his 60s and that a prisoner in his 40s had been arrested on suspicion of his murder and was in police custody.

Police said they were called at 7.35am on Monday with reports that a male prisoner had been found dead in a cell.

“Next of kin have been informed. Formal identification has not taken place. A postmortem examination will take place in due course,” officers said in a statement.

“The murder investigation is being led by Detective Chief Inspector Rebecca Reeves of the Homicide and major crime command. Inquiries continue.”

HMP Wandsworth is the UK’s largest prison and can hold more than 1,800 prisoners. It is a category B prison – one below the maximum level of security.
