Man arrested on suspicion of woman's murder released from custody

A man arrested on suspicion of murder after a woman was found dead at home has been released from police custody.

Emergency services were called to a house on Birch Grove, in Garswood , in the early hours of Tuesday morning.

A 33-year-old woman was found dead and a man at the scene was arrested on suspicion of murder .

The 31-year-old was taken into custody and was being interviewed at a Merseyside police station as officers continued to investigate the death which was described as unexplained.

Forensic officers were still at the house on Wednesday afternoon as residents in the area spoke of their shock over the woman's tragic death.

One resident said: "It's very sad, it's terrible.

"The thought of what's happened is sad. They were only young."

In the hours after the woman's death her next of kin were informed and supported by specially trained officers.

On Wednesday night, Merseyside Police confirmed that the death was no longer being treated as suspicious and the man arrested has been released without charge.

A spokesperson for the force said: "A 31-year-old man from Ashton-in-Makerfield arrested on Tuesday, 3 March following the death of a woman at a house on Birch Grove has been released without charge.

"An investigation remains ongoing and the death is currently being treated as unexplained, although it is not believed to be suspicious."

At the time of the death, Detective Inspector Leanne Toole said: "A woman has sadly died overnight and we are appealing to anyone who may have seen anything suspicious or heard something in the early hours of this morning or last night to get in touch with police.”
