Man arrested on suspicion of drug driving after fatal crash on A64 near York Designer Outlet

A man has been arrested on suspicion of drug driving after a fatal collision on the A64 near York.

A pedestrian, who was in his 40s, died after he was hit by a car near York Designer Outlet, at around 5am on Tuesday, February 4.

The 33-year-old driver of the car that was involved has been arrested on suspicion of drug driving and driving while unfit through drugs.

He is currently being held in custody.

for several hours while North Yorkshire Police conduct an investigation and this has caused long delays on roads across York.

The eastbound carriageway has been reopened, but the westbound carriageway remains closed.

A police spokeswoman said: "Sadly the pedestrian, a man in his forties, was pronounced dead at the scene.

"The road was closed between the A19 junction and the A1036 to enable emergency services to attend and for officers to conduct a thorough investigation of the scene.

"A 33-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of drug driving and driving while unfit through drugs. He is currently in police custody."
